SOMEWHERE CO-OPERATIVE HOUSING ASSOCIATION
Membership
Before living in the coop, SCHAs members generally live in inadequate private rented or temporary housing. They have to demonstrate that they are in some housing need.

SCHA currently consists of over 20 members and includes children and people in their seventies. The membership of SCHA is stable with a slow turnover; there are members who have lived in the co-op for over 40 years and raised their families in its housing. However, SCHA continues to be able to attract new younger members to make up a balanced community.

To become a member

The co-op is not a letting agency. It runs and works on the principles of co-operation and caters for people who share a belief in that principle. Indeed, for its own stability and good management, it needs to recruit members who want to live and work co-operatively.

The process of becoming a member involves submitting an application form, being interviewed and attending three general meetings of the coop and then a decision by the whole coop. Finally members are given a share certificate after paying £1. Membership then enables people to apply for a tenancy.

SCHA also has a maximum of 5 members who are waiting to be housed. It has on occasions taken over two years for unhoused members to be offered a tenancy. This is because of the very slow turnover in membership.
